Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales

The RTA is the NSW State Government agency responsible for:

  • managing the road network to maintain travel times,
  • providing road capacity and maintenance solutions,
  • testing and license drivers and register and inspect vehicles,
  • improving road safety.

The RTA manages a road network that includes:

  • 17,932km of State roads, including 4269km of AusLink network and 161km of privately-funded toll roads,
  • 2946km of Regional and local roads,
  • 5051 bridges, major culverts and tunnels, and nine vehicular ferries.
  • 3690 traffic signal sites, as well as other traffic facilities, systems and corridor assets.

The RTA employs about 7000 full time staff located in 180 offices throughout NSW, including 129 motor registries. It has a vast range of customers, including individuals, private organisations, community and road transport groups, local councils and State and Federal Government agencies. The 4.6 million licensed drivers and 5.2 million registered vehicles in NSW generate just over 19 million registration and licensing transactions.
